CNIB BC-Yukon is supporting the creation of a new parent/guardian advocacy group which aims to empower and connect families across the province and territory, working to accomplish advocacy-based goals, such as equitable education for students who are blind, Deafblind or have low vision. This program is inspired by feedback from parents, guardians, and students regarding their exhaustion from continually self-advocating within the school system. The group is fueled by students who are blind, Deafblind or have low vision, powered by CNIB, and guided by professionals.
Program Structure:
- One-hour monthly meetings will be held virtually over Zoom. At the end of each session, an additional thirty minutes will be available for social interaction.
- Attendance is on a drop-in basis; we understand families are busy and appreciate your time.
- CNIB has hired one parent/guardian to become the group's facilitator.
- Parents/guardians will create the agenda, set goals, and collaborate on accomplishing advocacy action items.
- CNIB will support the group based on their determined goals when needed, such as utilizing CNIB relationships with aligned organizations and experts.
- Overall, the group will establish a community of support, to assist parents, guardians and students.
The BC-Yukon Family Advocacy Group meets on the third Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT on Zoom. Zoom information will be shared after registering.
