Pup-dates: Hero blood donors inspire more donations

By Lisa Cooper RVT, Dog Care and Welfare, CNIB Guide Dogs

CNIB’s guide dogs in training are once again stepping up and helping dogs in need across Canada. In October 2021, our Canine Campus hosted its second blood donor clinic, and it was an even bigger success than the first, with 11 donations.

A black Lab is being held by a trainer, while the technician draws blood. This time, the guide dogs in training were joined by three working guide dogs, two CNIB buddy dogs, and one CNIB ambassador dog from the Ottawa - Carleton place area. Not only that, but the Canadian Animal Blood Bank (CABB) reports that, since our last Guide Dog Gazette article about the blood donor clinic at the Canine Campus, guide dog and buddy dog partnerships across the country have been inspired to donate as well.

Kimberly Hutton, RVT of CABB, writes “Thank you so much for everything you have done and are doing to increase awareness out there. We have had CNIB dog owners reach out in the Niagara region, Winnipeg and Alberta who want to donate.”

I would like to thank all the staff at the Canine Campus who volunteered to make the day a success. It couldn’t be done without them. The dogs, once again, were on their best behaviour and enjoyed all the pets and treats throughout the donation process. They are true heroes.

Plans are already underway to do it all again in the spring, and we have already been contacted by people who have guide dogs and buddy dogs wanting to donate again next time.
