Throughout consultations for CNIB’s new strategic plan, The Way Forward, we heard from parents and youth that the current educational curriculum creates inequities for children who are blind or have low vision. During the recent Manitoba provincial election, CNIB sent out a survey to all parties to seek a commitment that the newly formed Government of Manitoba would work with CNIB, educators, and other stakeholders to develop and implement inclusive school programming.
Parties committed to supporting teachers with the tools, training, and resources needed to support students who are blind or have low vision. They also agreed that students should have timely access to the devices, materials, and accommodations needed to succeed in school.
With the election over, the work to hold politicians’ feet to the fire is just beginning. In the next mandate of Provincial Parliament, CNIB will hold the newly elected Government of Manitoba accountable for their campaign promises to ensure barriers are eliminated for children with blindness and low vision so they can achieve their full potential.
With the right supports for children and their families, children who are blind or have low vision can achieve the same outcomes as their sighted peers. We look forward to working with the Government and all Members of the Legislative Assembly to implement these commitments and champion a Manitoba that is inclusive for everyone.
