Humans with CNIB Guide Dogs: Jodi & Shadow

Jodi is sitting on a bench in a gazebo outdoors. Shadow, a black Labrador-golden-retriever mix, is sitting on the ground in front of her.

“Shadow has a personality that just makes you know everything will be alright. When I was matched with Shadow in July 2021, I was quite nervous – mostly about “What if I don’t do this properly?” At 52 years old, Shadow is my first guide dog, but the CNIB Guide Dogs’ trainers and Shadow all made me feel at ease. Shadow is so funny and cuddly. He is sharp like a tack and still has a lot of puppy attitude in him when he is not working. Above all, he is so loyal. Shadow has helped me gain more freedom and independence. I can now go out for walks, to the post office, or to buy groceries – and not feel like I have to wait for someone to take me. I am more confident in public now because I know Shadow will not allow me to trip on anything. Both my mental and physical health have improved from being able to walk him daily. Having Shadow makes me feel like I won a lottery!” – Jodi
