Humans with CNIB Guide Dogs: Chris & Cody

"I felt an immediate connection with Cody. I just wanted to learn more about this sweet boy in front of me." – Chris

“I felt an immediate connection with Cody. I just wanted to learn more about this sweet boy in front of me. That’s exactly what he is – a sweetie. He’s so happy when someone tells him how handsome he is. He makes me laugh daily, both on and off the clock. He enjoys chasing his tail as much as the next dog, but he’s definitely serious when he’s working. The freedom and confidence I have when I'm with Cody is something I truly appreciate. We can go anywhere, and I never feel stressed. Times are challenging during a pandemic but having Cody by my side is the best. He has the most amazing memory. One visit is all it takes for him to know where he’s going. When I first met Cody, he was with one of CNIB's Guide Dog Mobility Instructors. The three of us walked around the neighbourhood, introducing Cody to his new environment. When that same instructor came back for a check-up, he asked Cody to show him a certain bench at a bus stop that he learned about during that first visit. Cody did it – no problem. I’ve been a guide dog handler for 31 years. Cody is the first golden retriever I’ve ever worked with, and I’d have to say that I’m hooked!” – Chris
