Get Involved: Use Your Voice to Strengthen Your Community in 2023

By: Kat Hamilton

With many cities and provinces across Canada holding elections in 2022 and 2023, some regions will be recruiting people to participate in municipal or provincial committees and help make decisions that shape the lives of residents, including people who are blind or partially sighted.

Depending on your interests, there are a variety of committees that you can apply to be a part of. One way to get involved is by joining your local Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC). Accessibility Advisory Committees are made up of residents who advise their municipal council on identifying, removing, and preventing barriers to accessibility for people with disabilities.

Why get involved?

Getting involved with a municipal committee is a great way to create change in your community and ensure that your local government considers residents with sight loss in their decision-making processes. Though committee positions are unpaid and voluntary, they are official public appointments and are a recognized and respected position on a resumé.

How to apply

The application process varies from community to community. Committee positions will be advertised on your municipal or provincial website, and you can find out how to apply by searching "Public Appointments" on the relevant government website. You can also contact your local city clerk or government phone number. Some smaller regions may not have an Accessibility Advisory or other committees.

If you have questions or would like support in applying for a position, please contact your local CNIB advocacy representative:
