CNIB Creates a New Way Forward With 2023-2028 Strategic Plan – Guide Dog Gazette, Winter 2024

In the fall, CNIB launched its new 2023-2028 strategic plan, The Way Forward, developed to dismantle barriers and deliver limitless opportunities to all Canadians – today, tomorrow and together.

Built on the direction and feedback of people who are blind, Deafblind, and have low vision across Canada – as well as their supporters – the strategic plan puts a magnifying glass on the societal constraints facing Canadians who are blind today, unpacks the real issues impacting the community and lays a roadmap to create effective solutions for change.  The front cover of CNIB’s strategic plan, The Way Forward. It features a collage of photos of people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision of different ages, genders, and ethnicities.

The plan addresses key issues identified through our community consultations and makes three commitments:

  1. Attitude Is Everything: Increase understanding of blindness and dispel misconceptions about people who are blind, low vision, or Deafblind.
  2. Safe and Accessible Journeys: Remove barriers and create safe, accessible door-to-door journeys for all.
  3. Our Kids Will Thrive: Give parents and children the support they need to excel in and out of the classroom.

While the heart of The Way Forward is in public awareness, transportation, and support for children and families, every strategic commitment outlined in the plan also aligns with the CNIB Guide Dogs program.

Be the change
For over a hundred years, CNIB has worked alongside our community to move the needle on issues that affect them – inch by inch, day by day. Now we’re ready to be louder, more focused, and bolder than ever before. The time for change is now.

An integral part of this plan involves engaging passionate allies who are ready and willing to join us in this work. CNIB cannot tear down these barriers alone. We need support. We need to shout our message from the rooftops and engage everyone we can to stand with us. To help us drive this ambitious strategic plan forward, we’re asking you and everyone who believes in a limitless future for people with sight loss to work with us today.
