Ending isolation: The impact of the CNIB Mobile Hub

Imagine you live in a small town or rural community, and you suddenly lose your sight. You can’t drive anymore and public transit is scarce. There are programs available to help you adapt to your sight loss, but they’re hours away. Suddenly you feel confined to your own home, isolated from the rest of the world.

This scenario is a reality for many people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision. That’s why we launched the CNIB Mobile Hub, a new program delivery model that brings pop-up events and programming to rural and isolated communities across Canada. From hands-on technology training to peer support groups and recreational activities, the Mobile Hub empowers participants to lead more independent and connected lives within their own communities.

"I lost my central vision and, unfortunately, my driver's license… [CNIB] provided incredible support during such a challenging time,” says Cécile from Alma, Quebec, who was excited to take part in Mobile Hub programming when we visited her region. “[The Mobile Hub] is important because it allows us to connect with others. Discovering CNIB has helped me feel less isolated and navigate this difficult journey."

But the need for Mobile Hub programming continues to grow as more Canadians face the challenges of sight loss, often as part of the aging process.

Transportation barriers, social isolation, and inaccessible public spaces remain significant challenges for many. In fact, one in four adults with sight loss report experiencing anxiety, depression, and loneliness, underscoring the importance of accessible support services.

The CNIB Mobile Hub exemplifies our commitment to meeting individuals where they are, ensuring that no one is left behind. With continued support, we aim to expand this initiative, reaching more communities and providing life-changing services to those who need them most.
