The Vision Mate program at CNIB connects people who are blind or have low vision with volunteers who offer companionship and assistance with everyday tasks. From running errands to taking leisurely walks, labeling household items to participating in recreational activities, Vision Mates make a real difference in the lives of those they support.
For Tammy Adams, joining the Vision Mate program was life-changing. “Meeting Karin was one of the best things that’s happened to me,” she shares. Before their connection, Tammy felt isolated and longed for meaningful companionship. That changed when she met Karin, a dedicated CNIB volunteer who quickly became a cherished friend.
The two stay connected through weekly phone calls, always finding time to check in and share stories. One of their most memorable experiences together was sailing through the blind sailing program—an exhilarating and empowering adventure for both.
For Karin, volunteering doesn’t feel like an obligation - it feels like friendship. “Selfishly, I don’t even want to call it volunteering,” she laughs. “Tammy’s my friend, and we just hang out.” Their bond exemplifies the true spirit of the Vision Mate program, where meaningful connections grow into lasting friendships.
Tammy expresses deep gratitude for all CNIB volunteers, recognizing the incredible impact they have. “I just want to thank all the volunteers from the bottom of my heart. This journey has been amazing and positive because of you.”
