Sessions Descriptions:
1. Navigating Inclusivity: Transforming Volunteer and Blind Community Relations
Tuesday November 19, 2024 | 1-3 p.m. EST
To understand how Vision Mate relationships evolve into friendships. Based on interviews and feedback, we hope to draft a survey that can measure attitudes towards people with seeing disabilities. Public attitudes are shaped based on other people’s assumptions and the language that they use towards perceived differences. The public may be hesitant to approach people who live with sight loss as they may not understand all the barriers individuals may face. However, Vision Mate volunteers are in a unique position to reflect on their experiences working with clients with sight loss as they get to know each other during their partnership. We look forward to meeting you and learning about your unique experience!
2. Mediating Inter-Provincial Transportation Journeys for Persons with Disabilities
Wednesday November 20, 2024 | 1-3 p.m. EST
This study aims to understand the travel experiences of persons with disabilities using federally regulated transportation services (air, ferry, rail, and interprovincial travel) to improve the quality of service received by passengers.
3. GROW: Getting Real-life Outcomes on Wellbeing
Thursday November 21, 2024 | 1-3 p.m. EST
Focused on the development of a research project with the intent of meaningfully impacting the life course of children and youth who are blind, have low vision, or are partially sighted. Our team will present a variety of methodological approaches and outcomes of interest such as education, quality of life, and career development. Participants will engage with different approaches for the project and help to create relevant outreach proposals for parents, children, and families.
4. Enhancing Explainability in Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Friday November 22, 2024 | 1-3 p.m. EST
Co-design Objective: Focused on the intersection of accessibility and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Our team will present a variety of innovative prototypes designed to enhance the explainability of AI systems, particularly through the lens of accessibility. Participants will engage with case study scenarios featuring personas with different forms of sight loss, exploring how these individuals might interact with and understand the explanations provided by the prototypes.
Each session will provide a platform for you to share your experiences, collaborate, and contribute to accessibility research.
