The CNIB community is mourning the loss of long-time donor and champion Arthur Britton “Brit” Smith, who passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 103. We extend our deepest condolences to his large network of family and friends.
For decades, Brit’s generosity played a crucial role in accelerating CNIB’s mission to change what it is to be blind.
A Second World War Veteran who was seriously injured on the battlefields of Normandy, Brit was inspired to support CNIB after witnessing many of his fellow soldiers lose their sight in action. With gifts totalling over $2 million by the time of his passing, he invested deeply in CNIB Kingston Hub, CNIB Guide Dogs, CNIB Lake Joe, CNIB Come to Work, and a wide range of CNIB initiatives and spaces across Ontario.
“Brit was incredibly passionate about the work of CNIB and gave generously to create a more equitable and inclusive future for people impacted by blindness,” said John Rafferty, President and CEO of CNIB. “In particular, his support of CNIB Guide Dogs was instrumental in helping the program expand as we work to meet staggering demand for guide dogs in Canada. We could not be more grateful for his many years of friendship, partnership, philanthropy, and shared vision. We will miss him dearly.”
Forever part of CNIB’s past, present, and future, we will continue to honour and celebrate Brit for many years to come.
