In July, Munashe Nyenya visited CNIB Lake Joe with three other youth from Alberta for the Canadian Leadership Development Program (CLDP). This program offers youth who are blind or partially sighted an opportunity to come together for learning, skills development, social interaction and good fun. We caught up with Munashe to hear what he had to say about his time at CNIB Lake Joe.
Munashe: The CNIB Youth Program Lead in Calgary told me about the opportunity, and I was immediately interested. I thought I could learn new things, meet more young people like myself and learn about their experiences. This is the first time I've been a part of this program, and I've enjoyed it so far. I'm excited to see what's going to happen next!
CNIB: Earlier today, you participated in archery. What other activities have you taken part in at Lake Joe?
Munashe: We went canoeing, learned about boat safety and did some swimming in the lake. We've done some arts and crafts, mindfulness beads, made necklaces and some ceramic tiles. So many things have happened. The canoe dunk test! This whole week has been really fun.
CNIB: Overall, how was your experience at CNIB Lake Joe?
Munashe: It's been amazing. The people here are great, the participants are awesome, the campus is amazing, and the activities are top-notch. I’ve learned so much in the seminars about leadership and my leadership style –things I can apply now and ten years from now. I also developed my public speaking and advocacy skills. My favourite seminar was learning about the importance of building your personal brand and the influence we can have in the world.
*Editor’s Note: The canoe dunk test teaches people how to safely get out of a situation if their canoe dunks. They learn the skills of how to flip their canoe back over and rescue themselves. It’s also used as a team and communication-building activity.
