It’s more than just a cup of joe. “Let’s Chat with Louise”, facilitated by Moncton’s Louise Burley, brings people together to combat the negative impacts of isolation.

“A few people have told me they’ve become less depressed since attending the chats,” says Louise. “Another person said they've felt less alone.”

Louise became a CNIB volunteer in March 2020 to provide support for people who are blind or partially sighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was a time of great need and total isolation for all of us. I wanted to give back to my community as someone with sight loss,” says Louise. “Using the Zoom platform regularly provided us with a feeling of connection. It also boosted our confidence with using the technology.”

Louise invites people to join nationwide conversations on a variety of topics, including recipes, guide dogs, white cane techniques, and anything of mutual interest. The dynamics of the group chats vary from week to week.

“I have been incredibly impressed with the wide range of personalities and diverse cultures of participants who attend my chats,” says Louise. “I have also learned the importance of connecting with peers from coast to coast. It’s something to look forward to every week.”

Louise also hosts a group - “On Parle Avec Louise” - for francophone participants.
