In August, we invited six children partnered with buddy dogs and three children waiting to be matched with a buddy dog to CNIB Lake Joe to participate in a new pilot program.
The program was inspired by the candid friendship between Mason and Ollie that emerged last summer at CNIB Lake Joe. After witnessing Mason and Ollie's experience at camp, we wanted to offer the same opportunities for other children partnered with, or waiting for, CNIB Buddy Dogs.
The four-day program came to life thanks in part to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, and the amazing teamwork between our philanthropy team, CNIB Lake Joe staff and CNIB Guide Dog staff.
For some attendees, this was their first time visiting CNIB Lake Joe. Guests participated in activities like rock-climbing, swimming, kayaking, tubing, tandem cycling, scavenger hunts, a talent show, and informative sessions about dog training, dog health and grooming. Children also had an opportunity to experience firsthand what it's like to walk with a guide dog in a harness, and hear from Diane Bergeron, President of CNIB Guide Dogs, about her experiences as a guide dog handler.
Children currently partnered with buddy dogs shared their experiences with the group and encouraged those patiently waiting for their buddy dog. They also received personalized video messages from the puppy raisers who raised their buddy dogs.
One of the parents in attendance said: "This is the happiest I've ever seen her!"
We collected a lot of positive feedback from both children and parents, and great ideas have emerged to make next year's program even better. A special thank you to everyone who helped make the magic happen at CNIB Lake Joe this summer!
