CNIB Saskatchewan – Fall Programs

Join us! Our free programs are available to people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision as well as their families, friends and caregivers. Below, you'll find a snapshot of programs offered across the province throughout the fall. Schedule may be subject to change. We kindly ask participants to register for programs at least one business day before the start date.

Advocacy Programs

  1. Advocacy 101 – Self Advocacy: Dates and time TBC. This program is focused on the six steps to successful self-advocacy. The program includes four sessions. In this series, we will focus on: What is advocacy? What makes an effective self-advocate? When do people self-advocate? Why be a self-advocate? 
  2. Get on Board Campaign: Begins Wednesday, October 30 in Prince Albert. Experience what it is like to be blind and travel around your community using public transit. 
  3. Saskatchewan Advocacy Group:  Second Wednesday of every month, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Zoom. With CNIB’s new strategic plan, The Way Forward we will remove barriers today, tomorrow, together. This group of community engagement volunteers advocates for change and to bring awareness to the communities across Saskatchewan. The Advocacy Group will focus on our three strategic commitments: Attitude is Everything, Safe & Accessible Journeys, and Our Kids Will Thrive, and work on a variety of initiatives throughout the year in their community.

Children & Youth Programs

  1. Canadian Blind Hockey - Regina Try Skating and Blind Hockey Program: Wednesday, November 13, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at The Brandt Centre, Evraz Place (1700 Elphinstone St, Regina). In partnership with CNIB, Canadian Blind Hockey will be coming to Regina to host the 2024 -2025 Try Skating and Blind Hockey School Field Trip Program in partnership with the Regina Pats of the WHL. This is a can’t miss opportunity for any youth aged 4 – 20 who want to try skating or Blind Hockey. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Blind Hockey programs, camps, and tournaments across Canada. This program is free to attend and open to all youth who are blind or have low vision. To register for the program, please fill out this form by November 11.
  2. Fall Family Fun Days: Details TBA. These events provide opportunities for families (in which one or more individuals have sight loss) to meet with others for a fun activity.  Activities are based on the interests and needs of the group. The activities are planned and organized to encourage the participation and socialization of the whole family. It is critical for youth and their families to be able to interact with other families in the same situation. 
  3. Parent, Caregiver & Youth Support Group - Regina: Third Monday of every month, starting October 21, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at CNIB Regina. This program is aimed at creating a space for parents and caregivers along with their youth who have sight loss to come together and meet other families who have similar lived experiences. These groups will encourage parents and caregivers to talk about their experiences, including any struggles or successes they may be facing as they navigate their child’s sight loss journey with them. This could include discussing moving throughout the education system, home-schooling, medical journeys, etc. During this program, youth experiencing sight loss can spend time sharing their own experiences with their peers while developing social skills and building friendships. Parents and caregivers will work toward building a strong community of support together for their children who have sight loss. 
  4. Parent, Caregiver & Youth Support Group - Saskatoon:  First Monday of every month, starting October 7, 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at CNIB Saskatoon. This program is aimed at creating a space for parents and caregivers along with their youth who have sight loss to come together and meet other families who have similar lived experiences. These groups will encourage parents and caregivers to talk about their experiences, including any struggles or successes they may be facing as they navigate their child’s sight loss journey with them.   5. Reaching New Heights Rock Climbing:  Dates and times TBA. This 5-week rock-climbing program is designed to provide youth who have sight loss or low vision the opportunity to get active, while learning a new skill and building their self-confidence throughout the duration of the program. Each session will be two hours long.
  6. Saskatchewan Parent Advocacy Group:  Second Tuesday of every month, 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. via Zoom. This group is designed for parents and caregivers of children and youth who are blind, partially sighted or Deafblind to come together to establish a collective voice to advocate for the needs of children living with sight loss in Saskatchewan. Together the members of this group will share their thoughts and highlight their concerns from their lived experience. Together, your voices will be used to help develop a larger voice from a parent and caregiver perspective for the changes that need to be made to create a safe and barrier-free journey for youth with sight loss from the start of their journey and throughout. 
  7. Youth Adventure Club – Regina: Third Tuesday of every month, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at CNIB Regina. This program is designed to provide opportunities to youth with sight loss to develop leadership, advocacy, and compensatory skills in a social setting, with the goal of building self-esteem, confidence, social and community engagement, and empowerment. In Youth Leadership, the goal is to increase the participants confidence and knowledge about transitioning to post-secondary and work environments. The group also nurtures independence and helps the youth find out what they are capable of, while having fun and learning to support themselves and others. There will be opportunities for the youth to take on leadership roles and be involved in projects as well as, listen to guest speakers and learn from them. Youth Leadership participants are encouraged to be mentors during the CNIB summer camps as Counselors in Training (CITs). This experience allows the youth to build valuable volunteer experience for their future endeavours. 
  8. Culture, Sport & Recreation Programs

  1. Art at Remai Modern:  Date and time TBA, at Remai Modern (102 Spadina Crescent E). CNIB has partnered with the Remai Modern Art Gallery to bring an opportunity to create and to enjoy a descriptive tour. This program happens four times a year. Please join us for a described tour of art exhibits followed by a tactile art project. All materials and instruction will be provided. If you need an ASL interpreter, please let us know a minimum of five days in advance. 
  2. Dunlop Art Group: Last Wednesday of every month, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. This group is in partnership with the Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina. They provide craft supplies and an instructor to walk you through a craft each month. The supplies are mailed directly to your home. Registration is required.
  3. Regina Exercise Hour Program: Thursday, September 26, October 10, October 31, November 7, and November 21, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the YMCA (5939 Rochdale Blvd). CNIB is thrilled to introduce Exercise Hours, designed to make physical activity both fun and accessible. Recognizing the challenges in finding inclusive exercise options, we've partnered with YMCA professionals to bring expert-led fitness sessions to our community. Join us and experience a supportive environment where staying active is enjoyable for everyone!
  4. Regina Outing: Saturday, November 23, time and location TBA. Exciting outing where you’ll enjoy live music performances from a variety of talented artists. This program offers a unique opportunity to explore different styles of music, from classical and jazz to contemporary and folk. Whether you’re a music enthusiast or just looking for a fun and relaxing experience, this outing promises to be a delightful journey through the world of sound.
  5. Saskatoon Outing: Details TBA. Exciting outing where you’ll enjoy live music performances from a variety of talented artists. This program offers a unique opportunity to explore different styles of music, from classical and jazz to contemporary and folk. Whether you’re a music enthusiast or just looking for a fun and relaxing experience, this outing promises to be a delightful journey through the world of sound.
  6. Regina Walking Group: Second Wednesday of every month, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Wascana Lake (Boat Landing Dock). This group meets once a month to go for a walk around the lake. There are volunteers available to assist with sighted guide if needed. It is a relaxing time to exercise, have a chat or just network with others who have sight loss.
  7. Saskatoon Exercise Hours Program: Every other Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the YMCA (25 22 St. E). CNIB is thrilled to introduce Exercise Hours, designed to make physical activity both fun and accessible. Recognizing the challenges in finding inclusive exercise options, we've partnered with YMCA professionals to bring expert-led fitness sessions to our community. Join us and experience a supportive environment where staying active is enjoyable for everyone!
  8. Saskatoon Walking Group:  Second and fourth Wednesday of every month, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Market Mall - FreshCo entrance (2325 Preston Avenue S). Physical activity is very important and a great opportunity to connect with others experiencing sight loss. This walking group is open to all adults. If the weather is good, we will walk outside.
  9. Tandem Bike:  Details TBA. This program is designed to provide individuals with sight loss, blind or deaf blind the opportunity to experience the joy and freedom of cycling. Participants are paired with “captain” volunteers for a safe and enjoyable ride.

Peer Support Programs

Our peer support groups are for people who are experiencing sight loss. The topics discussed are relevant and chosen by the group to make sure that participants are getting the information that they require to live a full life.   1. Estevan Peer Support Group: Fourth Wednesday of every month, 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Estevan Public Library (701 Souris Avenue N).
  2. Kindersley Peer Support Group:  On hiatus. Second Tuesday of every month, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Caleb Village (60 Stevenson Crescent). 
  3. Prince Albert Peer Support Group:  Fourth Wednesday of every month, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Prince Albert Calvary United Church (114, 25th St. E)
  4. Regina Peer Support Group: Second and fourth Tuesday of every month 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at CNIB Regina.
  5. Riverside Terrace Peer Support Group: First Thursday of every month, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Riverside Terrace (915 Riverside Terrace). 
  6. Saskatchewan and Manitoba Indigenous Peer Support Group:  First and third Wednesday of every month, 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. via Zoom. This program is designed for blind or partially sighted Indigenous individuals who are wanting to connect with others who are experiencing similar circumstances in a safe and comfortable setting. Our Peer Support Volunteers take a leading role coordinating and facilitating this program. To register, email Brett.Cleghorn@cnib.ca or call 204-290-3294.
  7. Saskatoon Older Adult Peer Support Group: First Tuesday of every month, 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at LutherCare Towers (1223 Temperance Street).
  8. Swift Current Peer Group: On hiatus. Third Thursday of every month, 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., at Swift Current Lions Hall (155 3rd Avenue).
  9. Virtual Coffee GroupEvery Friday, 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. via Zoom. Make new connections and find friendships and enjoyable conversation. The focus is on a positive, inclusive, and safe support network for people who have experienced sight loss. Everyone is welcome. 
  10. Weyburn Peer Support Group:  Second Thursday of every month, 6:30 p.m.  – 8:00 p.m. Weyburn Public Library (45 Bison Avenue). 
  11. Working Voices Support Group: Last Wednesday of every month, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Zoom. This group is targeted at our participants ages 25- 60 who are working and would like to connect with others in the community with similar experiences. It would be a great place to share information as well as learn from guest speakers on a variety of topics, such as how to write a great resume and how to stay connected in a virtual world.

Technology Programs

Phone it Forward/iPad Deployment: By appointment only. This program is designed to equip participants with technology to increase independence. Phones are set up by CNIB Program Leads and training is provided by Vision Loss Rehabilitation (VLR) Specialists. We provide iPhone and a variety of Android phones. Vision Mate

Our vision mate program matches individuals living with vision loss with specially trained volunteers who offer companionship and one-on-one assistance with day-to-day tasks and companionship. Vision mate volunteers assist individuals with a variety of activities, leisure activities, career mates, organizing, labelling, as well as enjoying recreational activities together – like playing cards and going for walks. CNIB on the Road – the CNIB Mobile Hub is coming to a community near you.  Drop in to meet CNIB staff and learn more about free programs and resources for people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision.
