The iPhone and its big brother the iPad are amazing devices for the blind community. With an iPhone, you can browse the Internet, stay in touch with friends, take photos, get help navigating the physical world, find out what paper documents say, read audiobooks, and even make phone calls! There are literally millions of apps for the iPhone and iPad, and most things are 100 per cent accessible. You can adapt your iPhone or iPad to make the most of your usable vision, or even use them entirely non-visually!
In this four-part series, we’ll introduce the iPhone and iPad and discuss some of things you can do with one. We’ll show you how to navigate your device, how to customize low-vision features, and how to use the built-in screen reader for total sight substitution. We’ll also introduce you to Siri, the virtual assistant that you can use to control your device just by speaking and discuss the latest updates in the new iOS 18.
This series is designed both for beginners to the iPhone and iPad and for users who are new to accessible technology. You can join online or, if you’re in the Toronto area, at our GTA Community Hub at 1525 Yonge St, Toronto. We’re planning a combination of lecture, hands-on experimentation, and discussion, so be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad if you have one!
CNIB SmartLife: Intro to iPhone and iPad workshops are offered every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Zoom. Zoom information will be shared after registering.
