Interdisciplinary artists, Olivia Brouwer and Dawn Matheson, collaborate with CNIB to host a free accessible sensory-led nature walk and creative workshop in Waterloo at the Walter Bean Grand River Trail and Waterloo Public Library Eastside Branch for participants who are blind and partially sighted. The workshop will involve the creation of sound-activated mixed media sculptures based on recordings and sensory activities within the natural environment. Artworks created from the workshop will also be temporarily exhibited. This program has been generously funded by Ontario Arts Council.

Meet the artists:

  • Olivia Brouwer is a partially blind artist based in Cambridge, Ontario. She creates mixed media paintings, prints, sculptures, and sound art of abstract interpretations of our natural surroundings while inviting both sighted and non-sighted audiences to interact and perceive using the senses of touch and hearing.
  • Dawn Matheson is an interdisciplinary artist with a social practice, co-creating within diverse populations living with difference or disability using the medium of video, installation and sound. Dawn hopes to interrupt civic and social spaces with unexpected moments of beauty, curiosity and joy.

Touching Sound – Waterloo Workshop meets at the Walter Bean Grand River Trail  on Saturday, May 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
