CNIB Consultation on transit mobility in rural areas

Main Content

People with sight loss continue to loudly voice that transportation barriers are among the greatest they face, whether they live in rural or urban environments.

To better understand how people who are blind, Deafblind or have low vision and live in rural areas get around with limited or no public transit, CNIB is launching a consultation to examine transit and mobility in rural Canada.

As part of the consultation, we’re conducting a survey and organizing focus groups to gather feedback from residents living in rural areas. A rural area is classified as any region where the population is fewer than 35,000 people or if the second character in your residential postal code is a zero.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Complete our online survey. The survey will take approximately 10-20 minutes to complete, and your responses will remain anonymous. Although there is no compensation for completing the survey, you can enter a draw for a chance to win one of three $100 Visa gift cards upon completing the survey. The survey closes on October 21, 2024. Take the survey.
  2. Join a virtual focus group. We are also hosting a series of six focus group discussions to learn more about the unique mobility challenges faced by people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision residing in rural communities. Each focus group will be 2 hours with a maximum of 12 participants and participants will receive a $20 Amazon gift card as an honorarium for their time. Register to attend a virtual focus group

We hope this consultation will gather diverse experiences and perspectives about what it’s like navigating rural Canada as a person with sight loss. Your feedback will help inform CNIB’s advocacy efforts and support the development of a rural strategy advisory committee.

Together, we will continue to work towards creating safe, accessible door-to-door journeys for all.
