- Works with the Manager/Supervisor Deafblind Community Services, to effectively meet the needs of individuals.
- Provides one on one service and support to individuals who are Deafblind in the home or in the community; Assists individuals with tasks as required.
- Facilitates access to information for individuals to gather information, learn concepts and skills to make an informed decision, and acts as a communication facilitator and sighted guide.
- Assists in accessing Vision Loss Rehabilitation Ontario (VLRO) and CNIB Foundation services as well as community services; Provides intervention services at retreats (i.e., workshops, retreats, CNIB camps).
- Assists clients in pursuing community-based recreation, education, vocation, social and self-advocacy; Supports clients in literacy and learning opportunities
- Performs administrative duties such as reports and service tracking upon request.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Demonstrated understanding of theories and principles of intervention.
- Knowledgeable of Deafblindness and common associated health-related concerns in all life stages (children to seniors).
- Knowledge of multiple communication methods i.e. Two-Hand Manual, American Sign Language, etc.
- Well-developed communications and interpersonal skills.
- Well organized with the ability to time manage and set priorities.
- Demonstrated good customer service with a supportive attitude.
- Self-directed, organized, with attention to detail.
- Demonstrated individual-centered approach and commitment.
- Mature and professional attitude.
- Adheres to the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct set forth by the Deafblind Community Services Program.
Experience and Education:
- A diploma or degree in intervention for Deafblind individuals or related work experience in the field of Deafblindness would be an asset.
- Experience or a willingness to learn and practice alternate formats of communications i.e. Two-Hand Manual, American Sign Language, etc.
- Willingness to learn Braille.
- Good command of relevant computer applications.
- Travel will be required. Must be available to travel to an individual’s home and to their appointments.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
