Key Messages

Below are some key messages to convey when speaking to federal candidates and community members about CNIB's "TechNow!" campaign:

  • With the Accessible Canada Act now in effect, CNIB plans to work closely with the federal government to ensure that barriers are prevented and removed for Canadians with sight loss.
  • Technology can level the playing field for people who are blind or partially sighted - but only when it's accessible, available and affordable.
  • Technology is central for allowing Canadians with sight loss to lead independent lives.
  • The federal government should be funding cutting-edge technology that Canadians who are blind or partially sighted need and want.
  • By investing in accessible technology and programs, the Government of Canada will become a global leader in improving the lives of people who are blind or partially sighted.
  • Ahead of the federal election on October 21, CNIB is seeking support from the federal government for the following:
    • a commitment that any political party that forms a government will work with the provinces to create and deploy a national assistive devices program, so that no matter where in Canada a person with a disability lives, they will have access to needed assistive technology that is affordable;
    • a commitment that any political party that forms a government will greatly enhance available and affordable internet access for all Canadians with sight loss – both mobile data plans and home internet access;
    • a commitment that any political party that forms a government will invest in beacon way-finding technology offered at all Government of Canada buildings, parks and in public transit facilities that have been funded with federal dollars;
    • a commitment that any political party that forms a government, will only procure materials and devices, facilities, services and systems if they are fully accessible for Canadians with sight loss.
