Assistive Devices Program in Manitoba

We need your help!

Thank you for taking action! With the upcoming provincial election fast approaching, we are seeking a commitment from any newly elected government to establish a comprehensive Assistive Devices program in Manitoba. The letter below is designed for you to write to provincial candidates in your own riding about the importance of assistive devices such as canes, magnifiers, braillers, and smartphones in your life or in the life of a friend or loved one.

While some Manitobans are fortunate to qualify for funding through Employability Assistance for People with Disabilities (EAPD), the vast majority of the 19,000 Manitobans living with sight loss do not have access to funding for assistive devices. This means many Manitobans pay out of pocket for expensive and necessary devices, or rely on loans, charity from service groups, or personal fundraising.

The letter is intended as a guideline, and we strongly encourage you to edit it and include your own experiences and information such as where you live to give the letter a personalized touch.

Thank you for writing to your candidates on this issue! Together, we’re ensuring our future elected officials understand how assistive devices and technology foster inclusion for Manitobans who are blind or partially sighted.
