CNIB Response: Draft Policy – School Board Policies on Service Animals

CNIB commends the Ontario Ministry of Education for providing guidance to school boards on their policies regarding service animals. We also welcome the opportunity to provide detailed comment on the draft policy to ensure it adequately supports the existing rights of guide dog handlers and highlights the difference between service animals and guide dogs.

CNIB Foundation asks Canadians to donate smartphones after the holidays

Every year thousands of Canadians receive a new smartphone for the holidays, and their used devices end up collecting dust in drawers or on shelves for months or years to come – even though they may still be very new. This new year, the CNIB Foundation is asking Canadians to save their gently used devices from their fate in the clutter drawer, and donate them to people with sight loss through the organization's Phone It Forward program.

CNIB Foundation Ontario launches Know Your Rights

Through Know Your Rights, the CNIB Foundation Ontario has developed plain language resources (handbooks, videos, training, etc.) to empower Ontarians who are blind, partially sighted or Deafblind to better understand their rights, navigate the provincial legal system, and self-advocate to challenge discrimination.

A new exciting partnership between HumanWare and CNIB Foundation

The CNIB Foundation, Canada's largest non-profit serving people who are blind or partially sighted, has signed an exciting new partnership agreement with HumanWare, makers of accessible technologies for people with sight loss.

Through this partnership, the CNIB Foundation and the people it serves will have access to the latest assistive technologies as soon as they become available, across all its enterprises including Shop CNIB, Frontier Accessibility, as well as its affiliate organization, Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada.

CNIB Response to Government e-scooter announcement – December 2019

On November 27, 2019 the Ontario Ministry of Transportation outlined their plans to introduce an e-scooter pilot, following the initial consultation, which took place in September.

The government's most recent announcement brings uncertainty regarding accessibility and safety for vulnerable pedestrians and people with disabilities, including 681,000 Ontarians who are blind or partially sighted.
