General Responsibilities Orientation & Mobility:

  • Conducts pre and post service assessments and documents the O&M needs and personal goals of individuals with vision loss.
  • With the individual, identifies and prioritizes client-chosen goals and objectives.
  • Plans and carries out mutually agreed upon training plans
  • Records progress notes and documents functional improvement by clients
  • Uses electronic assessments and templates in the EVRR system to identify and document clients’ challenges and training plans
  • Teaches concept development, spatial and sensory awareness, pre-cane skills, cane techniques, and travel skills. 
  • Encourages and provides support in assertiveness/advocacy skills to individuals as it relates to orientation and mobility.
  • Provides tactile maps, information and lessons in the use of electronic aids, as required.
  • Teaches sighted guide to family members, caregivers and others
  • Acts as a resource person for information regarding guide dog schools. Provides skill development to prepare individuals to work with a guide dog. Works with guide dog schools as required.
  • Acts as a resource in matters related to universal design and the built environment.
  • Adheres to established best practice standards, service rules and procedures.

General Responsibilities Independent Living Skills:

  • Assesses the independent living needs and abilities of individuals
  • With the individual, identifies and prioritizes goals, and develops an independent living plan
  • Teaches adaptive skills for independent living in areas of personal management, household management, communication, leisure activities, basic indoor orientation & mobility skills, and basic technology training 
  • Assists individuals in the acquisition and use of assistive devices
  • Promotes self-advocacy skills for individuals living with vision loss to access community programs and resources (i.e. leisure programs, acquisition of adaptive equipment, etc.)
  • Maintains all case data and documentation consistent with CNIB Systems and Procedures
  • Provides consultation, public education, and in-service training
  • Performs administrative duties including, but not limited to service tracking, benchmarking, report writing, etc.
  • Adheres to established best practice standards, service rules and procedures


  • Liaises and builds relationships with community based rehabilitation teams, agencies, schools, partners and stakeholders.
  • Provides support and consultation to individuals and their families re: adjustment to vision loss.
  • Contributes as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Promotes an understanding and awareness of vision health related issues through consultation, public education and in-service training.
  • Assists with the training, placement and supervision of volunteers and students

 Problem Solving/Time Frame of Impact

  • Utilizing established business rules, service standards and practices, ensures policy and procedures are followed in a timely fashion.
  • Provide timely delivery of lessons to ensure individuals with vision loss acquire skills to retain/regain independence.
  • Ability to creatively and quickly problem solve to respond to unique individual needs.

Decision Autonomy

  • Utilizes Agency based curriculum, standard procedures and processes to work with individuals on developing an individual program to accommodate their unique needs.
  • Utilizes judgment when determining if the individual requires referral to another CNIB service or external services.


  • Takes initiative to be knowledgeable in the areas of expertise
  • Takes initiative to be knowledgeable of guide dog schools and their programs
  • Provides leadership to community groups and partners by educating, advocating and promoting awareness about vision loss.
  • Provides leadership in training and coaching volunteers, students and staff.
  • Facilitate and enhance team efforts on a professional level and share specialized knowledge, sources, experience, concepts, and skills.
  • Trains and coaches volunteers as required.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with vision loss.
  • Knowledgeable about disabilities and all life stages (children to seniors)
  • Well developed interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving ability.
  • Mature and professional attitude.
  • Self-directed, organized and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrated client centred approach and commitment.
  • Able to work confidentially in a technology intensive operating environment utilizing both standard office software and specialized client management technology.
  • Knowledge and experience working with access technology.

Experience and Education:

  • Graduate of the Instructor for Blind and Visually Impaired Program (Mohawk College); Diploma in Specialized Studies, O&M and Vision Rehabilitation (University of Montreal), or other related/equivalent studies.
  • Good command of relevant computer applications. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Eligible for ACVREP certification.
Working conditions
  • Service will be provided in CNIB centres, individual homes and/or the community.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Travel throughout a large region of BC is required.
