The position entails, but is not limited to the following:
- Empower youth who are blind or partially sighted by providing them with the tools and opportunities they need to grow into confident and self-motivated adults
- Guide and support students who are blind or partially sighted and their families from preschool through to post-secondary graduation, ensuring children and youth have access to the same educational and experiential learning opportunities as their sighted peers
- Provide one-to-one support for young adults in transition planning, interpersonal relations, family issues, career counseling, educational planning and personal issues relating to vision loss
- Conduct initial assessments and registration of new individuals and their families to determine appropriate internal and external services
- Develop and implement appropriate group programming for children, youth and parents/caregivers
- Prepare case histories and reports, and maintain up-to-date client file reports; complete all service tracking in a timely manner
- Provide resources and work in consultation with school personnel and other community agencies supporting our children, youth and their families
- Remain current on agency policies and community resources and provide information as applicable
- Provide education and awareness in areas of vision loss and/or combined loss of hearing and sight via in-services, workshops, etc. for families, professionals, students, and others as requested
- Participate in meetings and conferences at schools, health units, government and other agencies as appropriate
- Prepare and provide reports to divisional office regarding programs and activities of the department when required
- Ensure program outcomes are met and support with reporting of same to program funders
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Knowledge of educational, medical and disabled rights issues
- Knowledge of childhood growth and development
- Awareness of specific issues regarding vision loss or a willingness to learn
- Excellent communication, diplomacy and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrates maturity and sensitivity, as well as possessing emotional and social stability when dealing with the needs of persons experiencing vision loss
- Must be organized, self-motivated, flexible and adaptable
- Enjoy meeting new challenges
Experience and Education
- Bachelor or Diploma in Social Work, Education, Psychology, Child Development or equivalent
- 1-2 years’ experience working with children with vision loss and/or combined loss in hearing and sight, and/or multi-handicapped children and their families would be an asset.
- Current First Aid and CPR certificates is an asset
- Required to work flexible hours – evening work is integral to the position (2-3 evenings per week)
- Travel in Edmonton and Northern Alberta required
- Home visits to families
