Job description

CNIB’s Lake Joseph Centre (commonly known as “Lake Joe”) is a fully accessible lakefront residential facility located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, providing a unique blend of recreation, skills training, social interaction, and personal discovery in a safe, inclusive environment. Two hours north of Toronto, Lake Joe stretches over 12.5 acres of waterfront property on the northwest corner of beautiful Lake Joseph. Staff and volunteers provide a wide range of high quality programs to people of all ages who are living with vision loss.

The Lead, Special Programs and Leadership will lead and support the planning and facilitation of all special programming as well as take a supportive leadership role with staff and volunteers at the CNIB Lake Joseph Centre. This includes special events (e.g. Carnival, Casino Night, theme days, etc.) as well as supporting the land functions and staff of the CNIB Lake Joseph Centre (campfires, arts and crafts, tandem biking etc.). The Lead, Special Programs and Leadership will also be responsible for the further development, execution and evaluation of Lake Joe's leadership programs (LIT, CIT, WILD). This position takes an active role in other programming as assigned. The Lead, Special Programs and Leadership is responsible for supporting staff and volunteers to ensure that guests receive exceptional care and attention while participating in programming both on and off Lake Joe property.

 

Essential Duties entail (but not limited to):

  • Plan, manage and facilitate special programs run by the CNIB Lake Joseph Centre
  • Develop and execute all leadership programs (LIT, CIT, WILD etc.)
  • Supervise, coach, and support Program Facilitators in regards to special programs
  • Provide leadership to land Program Facilitators (training, supervision, evaluation)
  • Promote clear communication to all guests, staff and volunteers
  • Communicate and update staff, volunteers and guests of any changes to the programs
  • Ensure all appropriate supplies and equipment are available and in good working condition for planned activities
  • Work within a budget
  • Assist with staff training
  • Promote and encourage participating in ongoing recreation programs through endorsement of activities to guests
  • Ensure all staff/volunteers participating in the camp program understand their role before, during and after the program
  • Facilitate staff appreciation initiatives
  • Participate in all, pre-season and ongoing, staff meetings and training
  • Ensure programs start on time and all required supplies are ready before guests arrive
  • Participate in the coordination of all dining room duties and responsibilities, including serving
  • Assist guests in completing weekly surveys, providing a safe and encouraging atmosphere to provide their feedback of all on and off-site programs
  • Ensure feedback from all programs is recorded and reported to Management
  • Participate in all required change over duties
  • Champion a Culture of Volunteerism, by supporting an environment where volunteers are respected and valued members of the team
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Strong interpersonal skills including patience and empathy
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience in recreation programs and settings
  • Experience working in Ontario Camps Association (OCA) accredited camps an asset
  • Experience supervising and coaching others
  • Must have good organizational, planning, management and leadership skills
  • Current (within 6 months of start date) Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR "C"
  • Swimming certifications such as Bronze Cross/NLS an asset
  • Willingness to obtain F Class driver's license (must be over 21); current Driver's Abstract an asset
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card an asset
  • Good command of relevant computer applications and office experience an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of management practices, principles, and facilities administration
  • Experience planning and coordinating trips, including transportation
  • Demonstrated customer relations skills
  • Ability to work in a team setting and independently
  • Experience working with people within all age groups with vision loss or deaf-blind, as well as special needs is an asset
  • Ability to work flexible hours as well as standard camp hours
  • Ability to work in a changing, busy environment
  • Ability to travel when required
  • Ability to stay on site during camp operational season
  • Must be willing to share accommodations with another staff member
