Job description
  • Assist the Team Lead, Advocacy and Community Engagement in the planning and development of diversity and inclusion programs
  • Collaborate with Diversity Champions (Volunteers) to build community, foster a sense of belonging, create a more inclusive environment and support people who are blind and partially sighted from diverse backgrounds and social identities
  • Facilitate multicultural education training, presentations and programs to explore and provide critical reflection on intersecting issues of culture, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, social class, national origin, sexual orientation and other significant aspects of individual and cultural identity
  • Provide and develop work Plans, educational tools and resources to support community partners and allies provide equitable services to people with sight loss from diverse backgrounds
  • Advise, and train staff and volunteers on Diversity and Inclusion issues
  • Work collaboratively with the coordinator, Ambassadors program and other program leads to recruit advisory committee members, diversity champion Volunteers and community partners
  • Collaborate with the Team Lead, Advocacy and Community Engagement, to assist with programs for outreach recruitment and retention of multicultural participants and community partners serving diverse communities
  • Conduct research on potential community partners and use various outreach methods either in person, via phone or email to build and maintain partnerships
  • Attend community events pertaining to inclusion and diversity for learning and outreach purposes
  • Provide support, training and resources to program participants, partners and other stakeholders on developing effective self-advocacy, in the area of diversity and inclusion to drive achievement and equality
  • Develop website, marketing materials, power point presentations and social media announcements
  • Conduct research, answer student questions, contact speakers and community experts for information
  • Collect and compile data on Diversity and Inclusion programs
  • Coordinate, plan, implement, and evaluate Diversity strategy related programs, projects and initiatives
  • Create and distribute communications to community partners, Diversity Champion Volunteers, Diversity Advisory Committee and staff across CNIB
  • Support the evaluation, development and perform best practices for assessing the Diversity Strategy
  • Serve on campus committees
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with people with sight loss and/or people from different social, cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Excellent community building; passion for advocacy, community engagement, inclusion and diversity; ability to relate well to diverse community groups, volunteers, staff and others from diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Lived experience with sight loss and/or experience as a part of diverse/underserviced community group is an asset
  • Self advocacy and/or advocacy experience
  • Knowledgeable on inclusion, diversity and accessibility
  • Strong interpersonal skills and amicable personality
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound professional judgment and a strong sense of ethics
  • Ability to use personal computers for word processing and database management
  • Ability to work effectively and successfully in engaging in a global and multicultural climate

Experience and Education:

  • Post secondary education in a related field
  • Minimum two (2) years of related experience in developing or implementing programs and events focused on issues of accessibility, difference, diversity, equity, and inclusion
