The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:
- Assist in the development and execution of provincial advocacy campaigns in Ontario and Quebec
- Develop briefing materials and draft correspondence to provincial government officials
- Track correspondence and meetings between MPPs/MNAs and CNIB
- Monitor the activities of Ontario and Quebec provincial governments including legislation, regulations, policies, committees, etc.
- Build relationships with provincial government officials including legislators, their staff and bureaucracy.
- Provide advice and implement strategies for strengthening existing relationships with government officials
- Support research and impact analysis of legislation, policy and regulations of interest to CNIB
- Provide policy and regulatory advice to the Manager, Advocacy and Government Affairs (Ontario and Quebec) and Executive Leadership
- Maintain an in-depth understand of current socio, economic and political issues and government legislation/policies that are expected to impact CNIB
- Support CNIB's national advocacy campaigns as they relate to Ontario and Quebec
- Assist in mobilizing CNIB Ambassadors, Advocates and the wider community to support our lobbying efforts
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Candidates must be blind or partially sighted in order to participate in the CNIB Internship/Returnship Program
- Must be bilingual (French and English) as well as have excellent communication skills in either language, written or oral
- Professional experience working in government or qualification related to politics or public policy is preferred but not essential
- Knowledge and experience in advocacy
- Excellent administrative skills
- Building relationships with varying levels of stakeholders and public officials
- Must be able to work independently
- Must be able to travel independently within the region via public transit or car (taxi, Uber etc.)
Experience and Education
- High School diploma
- Must have interest in government relations, politics or public policy
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- Occasional travel within the region
